Geologist Takashi Ashizawa (Tsunehiko Watase) investigates but has barely begun when an earthquake rocks the area. In the prologue, a young woman falls into a cave in the Sea of Trees area near Mount Fuji and finds herself in an icy cave full of large eggs, one of which starts t hatch. Many years later when I finally got to see Junji Kurata’s Kyoryu Kaicho no Densetsu/Legend of Dinosaurs and Monster Birds it turns out the film was certainly very eccentric. The shot seemed both eccentric and exciting. Similarly, interest in another Japanese film was piqued by another still, possibly in Greg Shoemaker’s excellent fanzine Japanese Fantasy Film Journal, a shot of a young woman being menaced by a giant monsters head rising from the water behind her.

The Legend Of Dinosaurs And Monster Birds is readily available on DVD from Tokyo Shock with an English dub and original Japanese audio with subtitles.In my review of Teruo Ishii’s Kyôfu kikei ningen: Edogawa Rampo zenshû/Horrors of Malformed Men (1969) I mentioned that my interest in the film was initially piqued by a still spotted in Denis Gifford’s book A Pictorial History of the Horror Movie. During MST3K's "trial run" on TV KTMA, they skewered this film. The Legend Of Dinosaurs And Monster Birds is an obscure film and was extremely hard to find for a while. The pterodactyl fighting the plesiosaur is very poorly done and looks very fake. The bloodiest scene during the battle is when the pterosaur pokes out the plesiosaur's eyball, but the "scare" is taken out by how poorly done it is. During the ending of the film, the two beasts clash. Only two dinosaurs make an appearence in this film.

The film even has many scenes of people being eaten by a plesiosaur. Other than the typical cheesy and poorly done dinosaur props that are expected, the film contains a wierd plot and strange, very unfitting music. The film was called The Legend Of Dinosaurs And Monster Birds. But in 1977, a Japanese dinosaur film came to light.
